Background

AromaTech is a brand of diffusers in the scent space that had an app for customers of their product to connect to in order to control their devices remotely. They had an existing app that they wanted to re-skin to better reflect their brand, but would be restricted to existing functionality.

Problem

The existing app was fairly bare-boned, so elevating the experience to match the sleek diffuser products was the intention of this project. As the project progressed, it was clear that some of the ideal functionality would not be achieved in V1, since we were limited to the existing functionality without exceeding the planned scope.

For round one, my real challenge was to make the existing flow of the app more user friendly and intuitive while not actually changing the baseline experience.

Requirements

I first needed to understand the requirements for what this app was intended to do:

1. First and foremost, the app needed to serve as a remote for the diffuser, so having the ability to locate the device, set a time for it to activate and control scent intensity was a necessity. It must also account for when a customer has multiple devices.

2. An introduction to the app and the diffuser controls would be crucial to new customers who may not be familiar with how the app interacts with the device. An onboarding experience would alleviate confusion.

3. The ability to mirror the site experience was the next phase of rollout, so having a homepage that had similar messaging to the site experience with the ability to shop for additional products would need to be available.

Then an audit of the existing screens would be necessary to identify where new features could be injected.

Prototyping

Once I had a blueprint of the existing screens, I then created prototypes to address each of the requirements.

(copy seen here is placeholder)

3. The ability to mirror the site experience was the next phase of rollout, so having a homepage that had similar messaging to the site experience with the ability to shop for additional products would need to be available.

Next Steps

Adding more visual interactive elements to the control panel for the device didn't make it within scope for V1, but a gradient wheel to control scent intensity and a more controls for the light settings are the next steps to elevate the experience further.
